Reminder: PrEP-related HIV screenings and office visits are a preventive benefit for our members
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is when those at risk for HIV take daily medicine to prevent HIV. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout the body. When taken daily, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV from sex or injection drug use.
At Priority Health, we cover all PrEP-related HIV screenings and medication management office visits as a preventive benefit with $0 member cost share. The current recommendation for these PrEP-related screenings and visits is about once every 60-90 days for evaluation and management.
PrEP drug information
PrEP medications (e.g., Truvada, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (generic Truvada), Descovy and Apretude) have different levels of coverage and are dependent on the plan type and the member’s plan documents. In some commercial and individual / ACA plans, PrEP drugs are covered at $0 member cost share when used for PrEP.
